Three Asian Americans Play in World Series

Jeremy GuthrieWhen Jeremy Guthrie took the mound for the Kansas City Royals, he became the third Asian American to play in the 2014 World Series.

Guthrie’s mom is Japanese American from Hawaii.

The Stanford alum gave up just four hits and two runs in five innings to get the win in Kansas City’s 3-2 victory over the San Francisco Giants in game 3.

“It felt like I was doing something that I didn’t even dream of,” Guthrie was quoted on MLB.com as saying.

“A lot of people say they dreamed of playing in the World Series. I don’t think I had that dream. But now, to live it, it feels right, and it feels like a moment that I’ll never forget.”

You can watch highlights of his pitching performance below.

The other two Asian Americans who have played in this World Series are San Francisco Giants’ Travis Ishikawa, the hero in game 5 of the National League Championship Series and Tim Lincecum.

Lincecum’s mother is Filipino American. He pitched 1 and 2/3 innings of hitless ball in game 2 before being removed with a stiff back. The two-time Cy Young winner, baseball’s biggest award for pitchers, did not play in any of the other playoff games this year. He’s been the forgotten man in the Giant’s pitching rotation, but figures to get more playing time in the World Series.

With the Giants’ middle relievers struggling, Lincecum is now back in the mix.

“This game is about adjustments,” Giant manager Bruce Bochy said in SF Gate. “Whether you’re a player, coach or manager. We might have to make adjustments in that area, which guys we’ll go to early, bringing (Yusmeiro) Petit and Lincecum into that mix even though they haven’t done it earlier.”

  1. RE: Three Asian American play in the World Series: Hello. I think you should modify this article to denote that Travis Ishikawa’s father is Japanese American. All three players are biracial and yet you only denote that Guthrie and Lincecum have Asian mothers. Ishikawa should not be given any less identification of his mixed heritage than the other two just because he caries and Asian surname.
