Voice of America: Chinese Americans Face Discrimination

New York ChinatownDiscrimination against Chinese Americans is improving but still a problem, reports
Voice of America.

A 2012 survey of US public opinion found one-fourth of those polled think Chinese Americans would support China over the United States. Another survey found 72 percent of Chinese Americans still see discrimination against their community.

The surveys support the feelings of Frank Wu, Dean of the Hastings School of Law, that he is still perceived as a foreigner even though he was born in Cleveland. Wu thinks many Chinese Americans are perceived as “communists” with secret loyalties to China.

Bernie Wong is active in Chicago’s Chinese community.

“Now there are many Chinese Americans who are in the corporate world and very successful in investing in new businesses,” she says. “So the whole attitude has shifted.”
