KPIX: You Can Help Fulfill Cancer Patients Dying Wish

Ryan ManansalaA Filipino American cancer patient on life support has one last wish–please sign up with the bone marrow registry, reports KPIX.

Ryan Manansala (1st picture in photo from L-R) is so weak he can’t talk and his only way of communicating is by writing on a white board.

A bone marrow donation will come too late to save Ryan’s life, but it could save someone else.

Less than one percent of the people on the bone marrow registry are Filipino Americans. 10 percent are Asian Americans. Bone marrow matches have to come from someone of the same ethnicity which is why its so important for Asian Americans to register.

“When it comes to marrow donation, just the word marrow freaks people out,” Ruby Law of the Asian American Donor Program said. “People still think you are donating a chunk of your bone, or you go through a procedure and it’s really painful, but it’s not true.”

Doctors believe Manansala has only a few days to live. The avid Golden State Warrior fan received a visit from a few players including Warrior forward David Lee.

“I called and talked to your dad today, and had to come by after practice,” Lee said.
