The woman in the iconic photo of the Japanese American on Bainbridge Island heading to an incarceration camp has died at the age of 103 (Photo:Museum of History and Industry | Seattle Post Intelligencer Collection).
Fumiko Nishinaka Hayashida is believed to have been the oldest surviving member of the first group of Japanese Americans sent to incarceration camps, reports the Bainbridge Review.
The photo of her clutching her baby was published by the Seattle Post-Intelligencer and seen around the world.
“It certainly gave her some notoriety, and gave her a lot of opportunities to speak out after that,” said Natalie Hayashida Ong, the baby in the photograph said about her mother.
