Colorlines: Are Asian Americans Nervous About Fresh Off the Boat?

Fresh off the BoatActor Randall Park sat on stage fielding questions from the audience after the pilot of Fresh Off the Boat premiered this weekend at the San Diego Asian Film Festival.

Park can feel the tension from many Asian Americans who aren’t used to seeing their faces and stories depicted on television. Everyone wants the show to be perfect and Park is trying to be sensitive to that, he told Colorlines.

“I’m super proud of this show, and also aware of my community’s desires, in terms of representation,” Park said.

He’s heard the criticism about the shows title. He’s heard the criticism of his Taiwanese accent and says he’s working to “get it right.” He understand how much it would mean to Asian Americans if Fresh Off the Boat is successful.

“I understand why the show means so much to people and why people are putting so much on it.”

The comedy is slated to debut nationally sometime mid-television season, but the exact date has not been announced.

You can read more of Park’s comments about early criticism of the show and a review of its pilot in Colorlines.
