Actor Randall Park sat on stage fielding questions from the audience after the pilot of Fresh Off the Boat premiered this weekend at the San Diego Asian Film Festival.
Park can feel the tension from many Asian Americans who aren’t used to seeing their faces and stories depicted on television. Everyone wants the show to be perfect and Park is trying to be sensitive to that, he told Colorlines.
“I’m super proud of this show, and also aware of my community’s desires, in terms of representation,” Park said.
He’s heard the criticism about the shows title. He’s heard the criticism of his Taiwanese accent and says he’s working to “get it right.” He understand how much it would mean to Asian Americans if Fresh Off the Boat is successful.
“I understand why the show means so much to people and why people are putting so much on it.”
