A popular new podcast from the creators of This American Life is under criticism for falling into the model minority myth and oversimplifying the minority and immigrant experience.
Serial is hosted by Sarah Koenig and according to BuzzFeed has an all white production team.
In her blog, Julia Carrie Wong accuses Serial of fitting the Asian characters into a neat model minority stereotype while juxtaposing that with the “threatening and untrustworthy black man.”
Wong’s thoughts follow a piece written by Jay Caspian Kang in which he says Serial suffers from what he calls the “definition of white privilege in journalism” — a white interpreter “stomping through communities that she does not understand” and presenting her simplistic conclusions as journalistic truth.”
