Japanese American Named Finalist for Tampa Bay Rays Manager

Don Wakamatsu Don Wakamatsu is reportedly one of three finalists to take over as manager of the Tampa Bay Rays, reports numerous news outlets including Tampa Bay.com.

Wakamatsu is a fourth generation Japanese American who is currently the bench coach for the Kansas City Royals.

Wikipedia adds his father was born in the Tule Lake incarceration camp. His mother is Irish American.

Wakamatsu attended Hayward High School east of San Francisco and went on to be a teammate of Barry Bonds at Arizona State University.

He had a brief stunt as a back up catcher in 1991 with the Chicago White Sox. He became the first Asian American manager in the Major Leagues when he took over the Seattle Mariners in 2008, but was fired in August 2010.
