Selfie Takes a Steamy Turn

SelfieIf you haven’t been watching the new episodes of Selfie on abc.com and Hulu Plus, you’re missing out.

In episodes 8 and 9, John Cho’s Henry turns into quite a ladies man. Not only does he now have a steady girlfriend named Julia, but his magnetic personality seems to be attracting women left and right.

Henry both comically and awkwardly deals with each advance. It’s quite a coup for Asian American men to see one of their own being portrayed in the mainstream media as quite a catch for the opposite sex. At the same time, Henry borders on the nerdy side much the same way Raj as played by Kunal Nayyar does on the Big Bang Theory. So is this a plus or minus for AAPI men? I give Henry a thumbs up, but would love to hear your take on this too.

Karen Gillan does a good job bringing out Eliza’s ambivalence towards Henry’s growing attachment to Julia. Eliza sees Henry spending less and less time with her and she clearly doesn’t like it.

So where is Eliza’s relationship with Henry going? Both seemed confused after all both are in relationships even as their own friendship grows. But can Henry and Eliza’s relationship ever grow beyond the plutonic especially when Eliza and Freddy’s sexual escapades has become a nightly occurrence? Do Henry and Eliza even want it to grow beyond the “just friends” stage?

The end of episode 9 takes quite a steamy turn. You’ll have to watch to find out exactly what happens.

Just four more scheduled original episodes remain. Fans of Selfie are still holding out hope Hulu Plus will pick up the series or that ABC or another network might order additional episodes for another season.

The next episode of Selfie is due out on Tuesday on abc.com and Hulu Plus.  You can also catch up with any episodes you might have missed there as well.

  1. Thanks for reviewing Selfie, Randall!

I am a huge John Cho and Selfie fan and hope to see more than the 13 episodes produced. One of the reasons is definitely the casting of an Asian American man in a romantic lead. I do agree that Henry is nerdy, but beyond that, he is portrayed as a complex human with positive aspects as well as flaws. In regard to the nerdiness, we see other characters be “nerdy” in their own ways. As a result, the nerdiness doesn’t define Henry, a positive for AAPI men, in my opinion. We need more well-rounded Asian-American characters in mainstream media.

Looking forward to future Selfie reviews!
