Asian Americans & African Americans Forge Bonds

Black Lives MatterTwo events are taking place which are cementing the bond between the Asian American and African American communities.

Seedling Change, an Asian American activist group, is organizing a  National Call on Black and Asian Solidarity Sunday night with Black Lives Matter.

Seedling change says its mission is to build a national pipeline for the next generation of AAPI organizers.

The webinar Sunday night is already filled to capacity, an indication of the interest in this topic in the two communities.

In Philadelphia, the commonalities in the black and Japanese American communities are being highlighted in a dance production, Flash, reports the Philadelphia Tribune.

Performer Rennie Harris and choreographer Michael Sakamoto came together at UCLA where Sakamoto was enrolled in a Ph.D. program and Harris was teaching.

Flash juxtaposes the two men’s cultural background and respective disciplines. Harris focuses on hip hop and Sakamoto Butoh.

Butoh originated in post-WWII Tokyo in the late 1950s. It is a hybrid between dance and theater.

You can learn more about Flash and how Sakamoto & Harris came together in the Philadelphia Tribune.
