China Daily: Chinatown Rallies Behind Family of Slain NYPD Officer

Wenjian Liu fundraiserFundraising efforts by members of New York’s Chinese community to support the family of murdered police officer Wenjian Liu have already exceeded its goal.

The volunteers organized a raffle and set out to raise $10,000, reports China Daily.

They exceeded that amount in one day. Tickets will be sold until the drawing on January 2.

The Chinatown Cares Community Coalition (C4) launched the efforts after hearing from several people they wanted to help.

“People know the community cares, but we’re so happy that the community embraced this idea,” said Richie Cheung, Vice President of C4. “Most of the donations have come from seniors, but one homeless person even stopped, so we’re kind of blown away ourselves.”

You can read more about these efforts and where the money will go in the China Daily.

  1. RE: Chinatown rallies behind family of slain NYPD officer: One thing that bothers me is that some folks are donating money in hopes of getting a raffle prize. I don’t think that’s what Officer Liu would have wanted, naming a street after him speaks more than the amount of money raised.
