Vietnamese Americans in America’s heartland?(Photo by Laurel Austin Studio)
Heck, most people outside the region probably didn’t even know there were Asian Americans in the heartland, let alone Vietnamese Americans.
Thus it came as a surprise to some when Hoang-Kim Cung was crowned Miss Nebraska USA earlier this month. The TV reporter for NBC Nebraska will go on to compete for the Miss USA title.
According to the 2010 US Census, there are 7,910 Vietnamese Americans in Nebraska. That’s an increase of 24 percent from 2000.
Whether it was the fascination with a Vietnamese American winning Miss Nebraska, or just Cung’s vibrant personality that captured readers’ imagination, the story went viral. It received more than 10,000 shares on Facebook and three times more views than the second most popular story of the year.
The story of Hoang-Kim Cung, Miss Nebraska, was AsAmNews’ most popular story of the year.
(CORRECTION: An earlier version of this story significantly misstated the census figures for Vietnamese Americans in Nebraska. We apologize for the error).
