Hyphen: Asian Egg Donors in Demand, But at What Risk?

Egg Donor LabThe average egg donor gets $5,000 to $7,000 for donating their eggs to assist an infertile couple to have a child.

Hyphen reports Asian and Asian American egg donors can expect upwards of $10,000 due to their high demand.

Asian American women utilize egg donor services at four times the average rate. Somewhat surprisingly, a study has never been done to determine if donating ones eggs is safe. Questions are being raised about whether egg donors are given the proper information before making a decision.

“We are supposed to think carefully about the matter of ‘risk-benefit’ ratio when making decisions about whether to approve a research protocol,” said Judy Norsigian, author of Our Bodies Ourselves. “That’s a fundamental rule in bioethics. Yet, how can we weigh the case of egg donation when no one knows what sort of risk we’re talking about for egg donors?”
