Chicago Advocate: Chicago’s Chinatown Bucking A Trend

Chicago ChinatownChicago’s Chinatown may not be as iconic as the ones in San Francisco and New York, but it has something most other Chinatowns don’t have (file photo from 2012).

The Chicago Advocate reports the population of Chicago’s Chinatown is actually on the upswing, bucking a pattern of Chinese immigrants choosing the suburbs over urban Chinatowns.

The population in the neighborhood has increased 25 percent over the last decade, leading to an increase in Chinatown restaurants. In addition, young Chinese professionals are returning to Chinatown.

A new Chinatown library is scheduled to open in the spring. The new Wells-Wentworth Connector will connect old Chinatown with the new Chinatown to the north. The first two phases of the project are expected to get underway this year.

Several new developments planned by Chinese investors are also in development. You can read more about the history and development of Chicago’s Chinatown in the Chicago Advocate.
