OC Register: Vietnamese Americans Flex Political Muscle in Orange County

Andrew DoA strong turnout from Vietnamese Americans in tomorrow’s special election for supervisor in Orange County in California is expected to greatly influence the election, reports the Orange County Register (Photo from Andrew Do campaign of Do leading a meeting)

A survey by Political Data inc found more Vietnamese American residents have voted absentee than any other ethnicity. The survey revealed Vietnamese American voters have outpaced Latino voters by a 3-1 margin.

In a field with three Vietnamese American candidates, that is significant. Traditionally Vietnamese American voters have overwhelmingly supported Vietnamese American candidates.

Candidates in the race for the District 1 seat include Andrew Do, Chris Phan, Chuyen Van Nguyen, Lupe Morfin-Moreno and Lou Correa, who has spent more money than any other candidate.

46 percent of the ballots for the 1st district seat are from Vietnamese American voters even though they make up 24 percent of the district’s registered voters.

You can read a breakdown on how this could influence the race in the Orange County Register.
