Fresh Off the Boat Viewing Party

Photos & Reporting by Shirley Lew

An estimated crowd of 1,000 people are at the New York viewing party of Fresh Off the Boat at the Circle NYC.

Eddie Huang, whose memoir inspired the show, is there.

So is Hudson Yang, the 11-year-old who plays Eddie in the show. Wall Street Journal blogger and father of Hudson, Jeff Yang, is also in attendance.

There are also confirmed reports of a Randall Park sighting. Randall plays Eddie’s dad, Louis.

AsAmNews’ New York correspondent Shirley Lew describes the crowd as “very packed like sardines.” Here’s hoping they don’t smell like sardines too.

In response to a question at the party from NBC correspondent Richard Lui, celebrity chef and author Huang said about the show, “Everybody needs to tell their story….We are here to break down the door.”

Park was asked by Lui if he was asked to “act more Asian,” a reference to what Margaret Cho was asked to do 20 years ago during the production of her show All American Family.

“This is through the eyes of Asian Americans,” said Park.

He said the AAPI pipleine in Hollywood is “slowly progressing and our show is a big part of that.”

Ninety minutes before the premiere, the line outside the door to the party was described as five minutes long.

Here’s a shot of the crowd outside trying to get into the party. No word on whether everybody who wanted to get in was able to get in. My guess is that there were some disappointed party goers.
