LA Times: Jose Antonio Vargas Joins LA Times for Project on Race

Jose Antonio VargasThe Los Angeles Times is teaming up with journalist and immigration advocate Jose Antonio Vargas for a multi-media project that will explore race and the changing American identity.

Vargas has been an outspoken advocate on immigration since revealing in 2011 that he has worked for the Washington Post and San Francisco Chronicle as an undocumented immigrant.

The project will be called #EmergingUS and will include commentary, graphic, video and digital content.

“Too often, when we talk about race in political and cultural terms, it’s framed as a white-and-black issue,” said Vargas, 34. “But it’s white and black and Latino and Asian and Middle Eastern. It’s Native Americans, who are too often forgotten. It’s interracial Americans.”

According to the Times, Vargas qualifies for extended Deferred Action Under Childhood Arrivals which allows him to work legally in the United States.

The project is expected to debut in the spring. You can read more about what the editors of the Times are saying about in the Los Angeles Times.
