The Hill: President Obama Designates Hawaii Incarceration Camp a National Monument

Honouliuli GulchThe site of the Honouliuli Incarceration Camp near Honolulu will be designated by President Obama as a national monument, reports The Hill.

A White House spokesman confirmed the expected designation today. Appropriately, the formal announcement will be made on the Day of Remembrance, marking the day President Franklin D. Roosevelt signed an executive order authorizing the forced removal of Japanese Americans to behind barbed wire.

“The president’s executive action is an important step in protecting Honouliuli and the stories of those who were detained in our state and across the nation, highlighting an important but often forgotten piece of our national history,” said Sen. Mazie Hirono (D-Hawaii) in a statement.
