International Examiner: What Day of Remembrance Means in 2015

Japanese American grocerToday marks the 73rd anniversary of the signing of executive order 9066 which paved the way for the incarceration of 120,000 Japanese Americans.

Today also marks the Day of Remembrance when Americans across the country remember President Roosevelt’s unconstitutional action so that it will never be repeated.

In a post by Maria Batayola & Toshiko Hasegawa for the International Examiner, the two wrote:

“These educational efforts are more relevant and meaningful nowadays when Arab American and Muslim communities are targeted with hate crimes in the aftermath of the terrorist acts on September 11, 2001, and when communities across the nation are chanting “Black Lives Matter” to call out police treatment of African Americans.”

You can read about some of the efforts to carry on this message in the International Examiner.
