With the recent announcement that the Muslim holidays of Eid Al-Fitr and Eid Al-Adha will be recognized as official school holidays in New York City, Councilwoman Margaret Chin is calling on New York Mayor Bill de Blasio to do the same for Lunar New Year .
“Asian American families across the city are still forced to choose between celebrating this annual holiday and sending their children to school,” wrote Chin in a statement. “I will continue to discuss this issue with Mayor de Blasio and his staff, and I will do everything in my power to advocate for the designation of Lunar New Year as an official public school holiday for 2016 and beyond.”
A petition has also been launched at change.org by Karlin Chan urging the Mayor to designate Lunar New Year as an official school holiday. In half a day, its collected nearly half of its goal of 500 signatures.
