UH Hilo Stories: Pacific Islander Students Debunk Stereotypes

Pacific Students MediaStudents at the University of Hawaii in Hilo are turning to social media to challenge stereotypes of Pacific Islanders, reports UH Hilo Stories.

Pacific Students Media formed in 2014 and has established its own You Tube Channel.

“It’s basically just telling stories and getting others inspired,” says UH Hilo student Axel Defngin.

“Instead of continuing to wait for the media to tell the stories of these students and the community, I decided to start a team of (communication) majors and other folks who are interested in that kind of work, to get them trained,” said Vidalino Raatior, director of UH Hilo’s Pacific Islander Student Center.

You can watch one of the group’s videos below and read more about what the group has accomplished in just a year in UH Hilo Stories.
