Army Times: Pvt Danny Chen’s Former Army Unit in Another Racial Controversy

danny ChenPrivate Danny Chen committed suicide in 2011 after being hazed because of his Chinese ancestry and at least 8 soldiers were court-martialed or punished in the case.

Now the Army Times is reporting his former army unit, C Company, is being investigated for something known as Racial Thursdays, a day members are given a free pass to use racial slurs.

“When I first got to my unit, someone said we should do ‘Racial Thursdays’ because it’s been a tradition,” said the soldier, who asked to remain anonymous. “It’s something they made up where you can say any racist remark you want without any consequences. The platoon sergeant said no, but the shit is still going on.”

US Army Alaska confirms an inquiry into the allegations have been initiated, but acknowledged the investigation is still at the informal stage.

“Based on the results of that inquiry, and if the evidence supports it, the commander, usually the brigade commander, can elect to conduct a 15-6 investigation,” said a spokesman, Lt. Col. Alan Brown. “It’s important to emphasize that these allegations are just that. They’re allegations, and that’s what the investigation has been assigned to find out, exactly what happened and if anything happened.”

Brown said there is no connection between the current inquiry and the Chen case.
