WBUR: Chinese American Tommy Chang Selected to Lead Boston Public Schools

Tommy Chang Tommy Chang, has been named Superintendent of the city of Boston’s 128 public schools (photo courtesy Boston Public Schools).

Like the Los Angeles Unified School District where Chung last worked as a school administrator,  the Boston Public School system includes mostly students of color. As stated by former colleague Tommy Welch, Chang “worked with many intensive support schools that are struggling the most…[he’s] able to navigate the different neighborhoods.”

Chang, 39, is believed to be the first Asian American superintendent of Boston’s public school system, and he will begin his term on July 1.  According to WBUR, Chang signed a five year contract with a starting annual salary of $257,000.

Chang previously worked at charter schools in Los Angeles and also as a biology teacher at Compton High School.
