SF Examiner: Chinatown Tenants Stop Evictions

Rally to stop eviction at 2 Emery Lane in SF ChinatownTenants facing eviction from a SRO (Single Room Occupancy) building in San Francisco’s Chinatown won a decisive victory with some high profile help.

Mayor Ed Lee, who in his early days worked as an attorney and tenant advocate for Asian Law Caucus, stepped in with Supervisor Julie Christensen to halt the ouster of tenants at the 32-unit 2 Emory Lane, reports the San Francisco Examiner.

“After hearing about these disturbing eviction notices served in Chinatown, we contacted the owners and property managers of 2 Emery Lane, and we are happy to report that, as a result, they are withdrawing the eviction notices immediately. They have also pledged to not issue any new eviction notices in the foreseeable future,” Lee and Christensen wrote.

The landlord had sought to evict the tenants on grounds they violated their lease by hanging their laundry in public view. Lee’s intervention comes after Thursday’s rally by The Asian Law Caucus, Chinatown Community Development Center, and Chinese Progressive Association in support of the tenants.

While this is a significant victory, it does not end the threat of eviction faced by other SRO low income tenants.

In his blog for Beyond Chron, Randy Shaw writes Chinatown SROs are prime targets to be converted into boutique residences because of their size and location.
