Asian American Michelle K. Lee was recently selected as the first female director of the United States Patent and Trademark Office(USPTO).
According to MASHABLE, Lee was selected due mainly to her experience working in the technology field in Silicon Valley. Lee was sworn into office on March 13th at the SXSW Conference, and made some noteable comments concerning the involvement of women in the STEM field.
“I’m deeply concerned that, 15 years into the 21st century, far too few women are getting into tech, and even fewer are staying in the field,” said Lee, noting, “There’s no doubt that women in tech face too many barriers to entry and success.”
Lee further commented on the mentors that she encountered, both male and female, that helped her to learn more about the industry.
