PRI is reporting the doctor who notified authorities about Purvi Patel has been active in the anti-abortion movement.
Patel was sentenced to 20 years in prison and is the first person prosecuted in this country under feticide laws.
Although abortion is legal in the United States, feticide is not. Feticide is the intentional destruction of a human fetus. It was meant to protect pregnant woman from violent acts. The prosecution in Indiana of Patel expanded that to include protection of the fetus.
Patel came to the attention of authorities when Dr. Kelly McGuire notified them that he suspected Patel of child abuse. McGuire is listed as a member of the American Association of Pro-Life Obstetricians and Gynecologists.
After examining Patel who came into the emergency room bleeding, he suspected Patel had given birth to a live baby and abandoned that child. He then went beyond what physicians normally do and went with police in search of the fetus. The baby was found in a dumpster where Patel said she placed the fetus in a panic. McGuire examined the fetus and declared it died on arrival.
You can hear an interview with PRI with McGuire describing what happened that night in 2013 on PRI.
