LA Times: Popularity of Korean Pop Culture Leads to Growing Interest in Korean Language

KoreanEnrollment in Korean language courses in college has increased 45 percent in recent years, reports  the LA Times.

Unlike the overall decrease in interest for other language courses, learning the Korean language has become more popular, due in part to the rise in popularity of “K-Wave” music and other facets of Korean culture.

“There’s no doubt that Korean popular culture in film and music has captivated the minds of young people,” said Rosemary Feal, executive director of the Modern Language Assn.

Students also believe that learning a second language will give them a leg up in the job market, while other Korean Americans view college Korean language classes as a way to reconnect with their culture.
