Player’s Tribune: James Hahn’s Letter to His Younger Self

James HahnUC Berkeley alum and Korean American James Hahn recently won his first PGA Tour championship and earned a trip to this week’s Masters Tournament in Augusta, Georgia. He recently wrote a letter to his younger self, in which he describes his own personal struggle towards reaching success in professional golf.

Previously, Hahn struggled to make ends meet while working at a department store and trying to pursue his golf career. After a successful spell in 2008, Hahn’s run of success began.

“I never would have thought I would win this tournament,” Hahn said after his victory at the Northern Trust Open in February.

Hahn started out life with the hopes and dreams of a starry eyed child. In his recent open letter to himself, he wrote:

“You’re about eight years old, growing up in Alameda, California, watching golf greats like Greg Norman, Nick Faldo and Chi-Chi Rodriguez. You can grow up and be like them one day. Everything in life is attainable. You can do whatever you want and be whomever you want to be. Keep dreaming big but know that there are hundreds of thousands of kids with the same aspirations as you. Some are even more dedicated to their craft than you are — so work harder.”

Life’s journey would show him reaching for the stars is full of misfires and wrong turns. Hahn takes you on his journey in his letter to his younger self in the The Player’s Tribune.
