NY Times: Chinese Immigrants Transforming Brooklyn

Brooklyn ChinatownThe New York Times reports that Chinese will soon overtake Dominicans as the city’s largest foreign born group.

The influx of Chinese immigrants is reshaping neighborhoods beyond traditional Chinatowns.

No where in the city has this been more evident than in the borough of Brooklyn where Chinese have been moving  southeast toward the ocean beyond even its first and second Chinatowns.

“It’s almost like a snowball going on,” said Peter Kwong, an Asian American Studies professor at Hunter College. “Once you get started in a certain direction, people tend to gain momentum, and they are moving farther along the subway line.”

Bensonhurst is now the largest neighborhood of Chinese-born residents.  What has attracted the Chinese here and how is this changing the city? You can read about that in the New York Times.
