Atlantic: Korean American Spreads Traditional Korean Music

Vong PakKorean American musician Vong Pak, based in New York, is a street performer dedicated to promoting traditional Korean folk music. Pak uses the Korean drum, along with dramatic performance techniques and dance, in his routines.

According to the Atlantic, the reason why Pak performs is simple.

“These days I’m not busking for money,” he tells Jenny Schweitzer, a filmmaker. “I want to share this [Korean] identity, this culture. As a musician, I use my music to help heal society” Pak said.

Pak also is passing on his musical knowledge, as he teaches a children’s music class, and hopes to preserve the art of playing the Korean drum.

See a video of his performances and his interview from the Atlantic to learn more about Pak’s journey in music and about the traditional style of music that Pak specializes in.
