Mercury News: Anti-Rape Rap Echoes from US to India

BombaebsA new anti-rape rap is being heard from California to India and raising awareness of domestic violence in both the South Asian and South Asian American community.

The Mercury News reports the rap by Pankhuri Awasthi and Uppekha Jain has generated more than 500,000 views.

The pair known collectively as BomBaebs is still touched three years later by the much publicized rape and murder on a New Delhi bus in 2012. Their anger reemerged when India earlier this year banned a BBC documentary on that rape incident.

That’s when BomBaebs came out with Rap Against Rape on their You Tube Channel.

Those in the US who work with South Asian rape victims say the culture of rape in their community is not limited to India.

“There’s a perception of it being a problem only back home, but when we immigrated here, we brought some of the same issues with us,” said Shailaja Dixit, who works with the non-profit Narika in Berkeley, CA. “Making a good salary in a good neighborhood doesn’t stop domestic violence from taking place here.”

Bombaebs has also released a second anti-rape song, this time with DeLon, a Sri Lankan rap artist-producer in Los Angeles. You can read about that and watch the video in the Mercury News.
