KUSI: Vietnamese Americans Return to USS Midway To Commemorate Ship’s Role in Evacuating Them

USS Midway Evacuations during the Fall of Saigon

It was 40 years ago this week that the crew of the USS Midway evacuated 3,000 South Vietnamese before the communist takeover of the former country.

Sunday, 5,000 people in San Diego attended a ceremony on the deck of the Midway commemorating that historical mission, reports KUSI.

Panic ensued that day as people evacuated from the roof of the US Embassy by helicopter to the deck of the Midway. The Midway was so jammed with people and helicopters that any choppers not being used were pushed overboard to make room for more evacuees.

You can hear memories from that day as well as see historical footage in the video report below from KUSI.
