UCLA: Japanese American Seniors May Hold Key to Healthier Longer Life

Japanese American senior citizensA study by UCLA found Japanese Americans are likelier to live longer than other Americans and are also healthier.

Those two factors make Japanese American seniors of special interest to researchers who want to know what’s the secret to a longer, healthier life.

The study found Japanese American seniors have lower health risks in nine out of 15 categories. However, arthritis and hypertension are two of the notable exceptions.

“Japanese-Americans provide a window into our future,” said Ying-Ying Meng, lead author of the study. “They show us one vision of how our nation can age and can help us prepare for the enormous generational shift ahead.”

Researchers also studied mixed race Japanese American seniors and those who identify with being Japanese in some way. To see how the results broke down, you can read the story here
