South Bend Tribune: Purvi Patel to Appeal Feticide Conviction with Help of Stanford Professor

Purvi PatelA Stanford law professor has agreed to take up the appeal of Purvi Patel, the Indian American woman prosecuted under Indiana’s feticide law, for free, reports The South Bend Tribune.

Patel’s conviction has been blasted by women right’s advocates who say her conviction is more about an anti-abortion sentiment than any crime she committed.

Lawrence Marshall co-founded Northwestern University’s Center for Wrongful Convictions and currently teaches law at Stanford. He says the case “cries out for reversal.”

“I think in most peoples’ eyes any mother who self aborts in a way that might deviate even slightly from the abortion regulations is guilty of feticide is an extreme, extreme proposition that I think is really unparalleled in the entire country from what I can tell so far,” said Marhsall.
