Solar Plant That Threatened Manzanar Historic Site Put on Hold.

posted by Randall

Manzanar National Historic SiteThe sun has set on the controversial solar plant proposed right next to Manzanar National Historic Site, reports the Sierra Wave.

The plant was opposed by supporters of Manzanar because it would have ruined the historic nature of Manzanar. As Bruce Embrey of the Manzanar Committee put it, the plant would have “destroyed your ability to appreciate what really took place here 70 years ago.”

The Los Angeles Department of Water and Power had proposed the plant to meet the state imposed alternative energy mandate. It says it could resurrect the project at a later time, but for now, the project appears to be on hold for the next ten years.

You can read more on the decision in the Sierra Wave. You can read Embrey’s full comments at the end of a column about the Manzanar Pilgrimage in Rafu Shimpo.
