Likely Republican Presidential candidate Rick Santorum made an awkward reference to Asian Americans when he said the breakdown of the American family, not skin color, is a better indicator of poverty and economic inequality, reports the Daily Mail.
Santorum cited Harvard professor Robert Putnam in his speech to a house full of supporters in northern Iowa.
‘Putnam, the liberal, you know what he said?,” asked Santorum. ‘”It doesn’t matter the color of your skin.’ He said skin color doesn’t matter anymore when it comes to these things. It doesn’t matter – I’m talking about black, brown, yellow – whatever, or whatever it is, Asian?'”
Santorum’s spokesman later tried to explain the remarks, saying yellow is normally not Santorum’s way of referring to Asian Americans after being asked if people would find the term offensive.
‘it doesn’t take away from the point he was making.’ said spokeesperson Matt Beynon.
