LA Times: First Asian American Elected to LA City Council in Two Decades

David RyuDavid Ryu has been elected to the Los Angeles City Council in a runoff election becoming the first Korean American ever elected to the council, reports the Los Angeles Times.

Ryu defeated Carolyn Ramsay 54% to 46%, a margin of 1612 votes. He will become the first Asian American on the City Council since Mike Woo left in 1993.

“All the big names, all the established players were not with us,” Ryu told the crowd. “But we had something more important, something stronger — it was the community leader, it was the block captain.”

Ramsay had been endorsed by Los Angeles Mayor Eric Garcetti and City Council President Herb Wesson.

  1. RE: 1st Asian American elected to LA City Council in 20 years: I saw that Mayor Garcetti once again supported the opponent to an Asian American candidate. I am saddened that once again an Asian American politician isn’t strongly supported. We’ve been strong in supporting various Democratic politicians of all races throughout the years but when it’s our turn, they turn their backs on us. Hopefully with David’s election, there will be more following in his path. I’m guessing there are many who are disappointed to see an Asian American finally get a seat at the table on the LA City Council. They probably would like to block us for eternity. We should all support David’s political career and although being elected to the LA City Council is a major victory, I hope to see him go all the way to Congress.
