New York Times: South Asian Men Navigate Tradition and Modernity in Dating

Afshan Qadir While South Asian men previously relied on traditional cultural matchmaking practices, today’s South Asian American men must balance the expectations of their parents with a more modern approach to finding a spouse.

According to the New York Times, parental pressure and scrutiny over one’s choice for a partner is intense, as parents often set their children up with a potential partner(being “fixed up by Rishna aunties).

“It’s exhausting. When you’re set up, there’s another dimension to that meeting. You’ve got to give a report when it’s over. That’s the tricky part. How do you tell the referring authority you’re not interested without offending them?” Mr. Khan said.
