While South Asian men previously relied on traditional cultural matchmaking practices, today’s South Asian American men must balance the expectations of their parents with a more modern approach to finding a spouse.
According to the New York Times, parental pressure and scrutiny over one’s choice for a partner is intense, as parents often set their children up with a potential partner(being “fixed up by Rishna aunties).
“It’s exhausting. When you’re set up, there’s another dimension to that meeting. You’ve got to give a report when it’s over. That’s the tricky part. How do you tell the referring authority you’re not interested without offending them?” Mr. Khan said.
