From Louis Vuitton to Bottega Veneta to Hugo Boss, high fashion is using hot Asian men to sell their products.
Asian male models are rising from obscurity onto the pages of fashion magazines.
The Huffington Post took a look at what’s behind this higher profile of Asian male models.
As with everything in a global economy, a lot of this has to do with good business sense.
Asia outspends Europe and the United States in the luxury goods market. It only natural then to be more inclusive when it comes to advertising.
“There have been huge efforts in fashion to be more inclusionary of Asian male models, and this has to do with everyone’s access to social media,” said Danyl Geneciran, editor of TOM* Magazine.
Besides the bottom line, is there another reason why the fashion industry is beginning to become more accepting of Asian men?
“It is certainly conceivable that, because the definition of masculinity is opening up and becoming more fluid in some contexts, Asian models and the masculine personas that tend to be attributed to them are now seen as more acceptable and, indeed, more desirable to the general public,” said Marc Lafrance, sociology professor at Concordia.
What do you think? Do you agree with Lafrance?
