Japanese Canadian and science broadcaster David Suzuki mixes science education, environmental activism and his Japanese cultural heritage in his latest book, Letters to My Grandchildren, reports the Star.
He addresses letters to his grandchildren about his experience in an incarceration camp in British Columbia during World War II and he also laments about how he never really knew his own grandparents. They were separated not necessarily by distance, but because of a language barrier. His grandparents couldn’t speak a word of English and he couldn’t speak a bit of Japanese.
He also takes the time to reflect on immigration and racism and how some Japanese became discouraged and returned to post-Hiroshima Japan after the war.
Suzuki who is best known for the show The Nature of Things doesn’t disappoint his fellow environmental activists and science buffs with his new book either.
