Chicago Tribune: Bad Business Forces Closure of ‘Chop Chop Chinaman’ Restaurant

Chop Chop ChinamanA restaurant in Chicago panned for the use of a racial slur in its name has shut down because of bad business, confirmed the owner to the Chicago Tribune.

DNA Info originally reported that Chop Chop Chinaman had been closed for days just four months after opening, but it was unclear why.

Owner Larry Lee who is Chinese said the closure had nothing to do with the name controversy, but said poor business forced him to shut down.

“I ran out of operating capital. I’m in the process of looking for an investor.”

The restaurant made the national news after Jeannie Harrell, who is half Japanese, scribbled her objection to the name in lipstick on the restaurant’s window and she was arrested for misdemeanor criminal damage.

Harrell is due back in court tomorrow.

You can read about the impact Lee felt the name controversy had on his business and on him personally in the Chicago Tribune.
