NY Times: George Takei Out in Front for Social Justice on Social Media

George Takei and Brad AltmanGeorge Takei this week was there in New York for the posting of his marquee for the upcoming November Broadway premiere of his musical Allegiance, the story of a Japanese American family ripped apart by the incarceration camps during World War II.

It’s a project his more than 8 million followers on Facebook are well aware is about to become a reality this fall.

The NY Times talked to the Star Trek about his use of social media and how social justice is such an important part of his message. Takei said it wasn’t intentional, it’s just something that evolved over the last eight years.

“The fan base I had at that time was essentially made up of my Star Trek friends, the geeks and nerds. I had to find a way to grow that base, and I found that humor was the best way to do that. And so I started posting funny memes, and as it grew I started adding my commentary about social-justice issues. And lo and behold, people connected with that.”

Takei sees the way most Americans have come to accept interracial marriage is happening with gay marriage as well.

You can read his thoughts on his sometimes contentious relationship with William Shatner and his views about the incarceration camps in the NY Times.
