The suspect was also killed.
Sonny Kim is a 26-year old veteran of the police department, reported WLKY.
Kim and fellow officers had responded to reports of an erratic man with a gun. Gunfire broke out. Kim and the suspect were hit.
Ambulances rushed both to the hospital where the two men died.
“CPD lost one of our best today,” said Police Chief Jeffrey Blackwell of the Cincinnati Police Department.
“It rattles me as the chief. It rattles the city manager, this entire department, this entire city,” Blackwell said.
The suspect has been identified as 21-year-old Trepierre Hummons. Police say he phoned 911 to make a report about himself. According to Cincinnati.com, he texted friends about a plan to die at the hand of officers.
Kim leaves behind a wife and three sons.
He also worked as a karate instructor and immigrated from Korea at age 7.
