Refinery 29: MTV’s White People Engages Audience in Provocative Discussion about Race

White People

MTV will air a documentary from Pulitzer Prize winning journalist Jose Antonio Vargas entitled White People.

Refinery 29 reports the program will make some people feel uncomfortable, but could also prove to be a conversation starter.

Vargas goes around the country to speak with Whites about their feelings about affirmative action, White privilege and other controversial topics dealing with race in America.

It’s scheduled to premier on July 22.

“Whiteness often remains unexamined in conversations about race in this country, even as it acts as the implicit norm against which other racial identities are judged. By shining a spotlight on whiteness, we hope White People will serve as a powerful conversation starter that encourages our audience to address racial bias through honest, judgment-free dialogue,” MTV’s president Stephen Friedman told The Wrap.

You can check out an excerpt from the program as well as the official trailer below.

You can also engage in these conversations online. You can find out more about that in Refinery 29.

  1. RE: MTV’s White People engages audience in provocative discussion about race: To be perfectly honest, I’m inclined to think this is another big media race-bait ratings grab. But, I really hope it doesn’t turn out that way, because I think a show for the diversity of opinions in the white population in America is important to the overall discussion.
