Some 200 Indian workers have won a $20 million dollar settlement from an American firm found liable by a federal jury of exploiting and defrauding them after Hurricane Katrina, reports NDTV.

The Alabama-based Signal International will also issue a formal apology.

The workers paid $10,000-$20,000 to recruiters and attorneys on the promise of good jobs, green cards and permanent US residency, but the green cards and permanent residency would not materialize.

“These workers have waited seven long years for justice,” said Jim Knoepp, legal director of the Southern Poverty Law Center. “This agreement and apology from the company will allow the workers to finally move on with their lives. It also serves as a warning to companies that might exploit guest workers.”

This is not the only labor exploitation case against this company. You can read about that in NDTV.
