WHAS: Prosecutor Fired After Remarks about Asian Americans

Mimi Hwang

A prosecutor who made disparaging remarks about Asians and other defendants has been fired by the Jefferson County Attorney in Kentucky, reports WHAS.

County Attorney Mike O’Connell ordered Karl Price to apologize unconditionally for his statements and take full responsibility for them. Price did issue a written apology, but the County Attorney’s office called that apology “hollow.”

Price had accused those at Hwang Martial Arts of being “greedy foreigners” and possibly “illegal aliens’ who operate under “ancient Asian principles.”

“I think the right thing was done. I’m really happy about it,” said Mimi Hwang. “If those things flow out of your mouth so easily, it’s hard to believe there’s no bias or discrimination against other people.”

In the dismissal letter made public, the County Attorney wrote:

“As an Assistant Jefferson County Attorney, you represent me in court and before the citizens of Jefferson County. You are an extension of me when you serve as a prosecutor. You act under the authority, direction, and control of the Jefferson County Attorney. After these many, many inappropriate statements were brought to the attention of the JCAO, you were given the clear opportunity to apologize unconditionally for this conduct. That unconditional apology and taking full responsibility for your unprofessional and inappropriate conduct would be the first step. Your July 17 letter makes clear to me you are not willing to take that step. As a result, I no longer have confidence in your ability to represent me as an Assistant Jefferson County Attorney.”

You can find out about other controversial remarks made by Price which were caught on video in the clip below from WHAS.
