ABS CBN reports that a boy being tried as an adult in the rape and murder of an 8-year-old girl in Santa Cruz, California faces life in prison.
Police arrested Adrian Jerry Gonzalez shortly after the body of 8-year-old Maddy Middleton was found in a recycling bin in the apartment complex where the two both lived. Gonzales is accused of luring her into his apartment, tying her up, sexually assaulting her and then strangling her.
Gonzalez’ mother is Filipino and hails from Romblon. Most expressed shock about his arrest, saying he didn’t seem like the type of person that would commit such a crime, but a former classmate of Gonzalez described him this way.
“He would say when I was friends with him that a smile is the best disguise — things that sounded weird. Coming from a 13-year-old, that was very in my face and that something is wrong. But I didn’t know what to do to help him,” she said.
