Nisei Week opens the first of two weekends in Los Angeles today, reports KPCC.

It’s been held every year since 1934, except for six years during World War II when Japanese Americans were forced to live behind barbed wire in incarceration camps.

Activities over the next two weekends will include a gyoza-eating competition, a parade on Sunday, the Japanese opera Kaguya-Hime, ondo dancing, an art exhibition, book fair and performances by musicians and dancers from Tohoku, Japan–a region devastated by the tsunami in 2011.

Details of the activities, along with a schedule and slide show from past Nisei Weeks can be found on KPCC..
