NY Daily News: Muslim Woman Unhappy with Settlement in Racial Profiling Case

Chaumtoli Huq

A prominent Muslim attorney arrested while waiting for her children to use the bathroom has settled her racial profiling case with the city of New York, reports the NY Daily News.

Last summer human rights attorney Chaumtoli Huq was standing outside a restaurant waiting for her children to use the restroom inside.

She was wearing a traditional Indian tunic and pants and had just left a pro-Palestinian demonstration.

Police asked her to move, but when she questioned it, an officer pinned her against the wall and arrested her for resisting arrest and disorderly conduct.

The charges were dropped, but Huq pursued the case by filing her own complaint. She has accepted a $37,500 settlement, but is disappointed the city has refused to agree to a meeting between police and leaders for the Muslim American community.

“The settlement without any changes is like they paid me for injury due to an open manhole but don’t fix that manhole.”

Huq is currently producing a documentary on the working conditions of Bangladeshi women in the garment industry.

She took a leave from her job with the city to produce the documentary, but says it is unlikely she will be allowed to return.

You can read about that in the NY Daily News.
