Metro: Why is Ben Kingsley Playing a Sikh Cab Driver

Learning to DriveOscar, Grammy and Golden Globes winner Ben Kingsley is digging deep into his Indian heritage in his latest film, Learning to Drive.

Metro reports that his father is of Gujarati Indian descent.

The English actor admits he’s not close to his Indian heritage as its been over 100 years since his family lived in India. He said he learned much while filming in India from his Sikh driver and body guard, spending almost four months with him. He also had a Sikh advisor.

“I spent a lot of time with [Sikh advisor] Harpreet Singh Toor, who helped me on with my turban every morning. I very gently, ever so gently chatted away with him — nothing invasive, nothing assertive, and just by osmosis took in his attitude to life,” said Kingsley.

He is also grateful to the Sikh community in New York which opened up its temple for filming

Learning to Drive is described as a coming of age comedy starring Kingsley and Patricia Clarkson as a mismatched pair. The recently divorced Wendy (Clarkson) hires Darwan (Kinglsey), a taxi driver about to enter an arranged marriage, to teach her to drive.

An unlikely friendship develops.

Learning to Drive has opened on limited release in New York and Los Angeles.
