Mochi Magazine: BuzzFeed’s Eugene Lee Yang Takes on Asian American Stereotypes One Video at a Time

Eugene Lee Yang

He’s gone from BuzzFeed’s Asian guy to just Eugene Lee Yang.

The viral 29-year-old Korean American sensation went from video producer to star almost instantly after his first video appeared in 2013 on BuzzFeed.

Mochi Magazine talked to Yang about the responsibility he feels to the Asian American community. Growing up in Pflugerville, Texas, he learned from an early age what it was like to be different.

“When I was a kid, I thought I was so ugly. Not because I was actually ugly, but because I was different, the weird looking kid,” he says. “I was bullied to an extent, and at one point, I felt shame about my ethnicity.”

Not every video he makes is specifically Asian American-themed, but he recognizes the impact of stereotypes and as a comedian, often finds himself straddling the line between being funny and being a stereotype. Much of his series with the Try Guys involves taking his clothes off or showing part of his anatomy.

“Every day, someone’s going to walk around and someone’s going to make an Asian small penis joke. At first, growing up, I always thought ‘Oh f***, do I have a small penis?’ That’s what poor little Asian boys think! But now I just think ‘Oh, you’re so stupid’ and walk away.”

You can read his thoughts on his comedy and the impact it might have on Asian American stereotypes in Mochi Magazine.
